Beautyberry is not native to Ohio or in any of the surrounding states. It is grown commonly in the SE US but this far north it dies back to the ground during a normal winter. Does well planted in an area where the soil remains cool and moist. More sun produces a better fruit set and this is what you grow Beautyberry for…the wonderful magenta fruit. Stands of this shrub are beautiful in fruit.
Associated Species:
Not native to Ohio but it is commonly available at garden centers.
We have three of these shrubs in front of the house on the east side. There it is protected from winter winds and is ready observable from our chairs on the front porch. The shrub is maintenance free for us and we cut the dead stems back in the spring. Growth is rapid and each summer we’re treated to the magenta fruit. It will tend to wander and clump up if left alone.
