Description

Cultural Information:

Beech are a component of the late successional forest.  Moist, well drained soils of lower slopes promotes good growth.  Intolerant of wet or compacted soils.  Does best in full sun as an older plant.  Younger plants benefit from the shade of taller, surrounding trees.

Associated Species: [6]

Sugar Maple, Red Maple, Yellow Birch, Black Cherry, Hickories and Oaks.

Field Observations:

True to form beech are found in more mature forests and woodlots.  Beechnuts are an important component of mast production in the fall.  Young seedlings seem to need the dense shade of a forest to grow well.
