A relatively fast growing tree that grows best on moist, deep soils but can also be found found on dryer, more coarse soils. A common tree throughout its native range in the midwest but it is in decline due to many natural and introduced diseases and pests. This was a common street tree half a century ago but you’d be hard pressed to find a large one in the wild. There are some cultivars that show resistance to disease. These seeds are from open pollinated sources with no known resistance bred into them.
Associated Species:
Pin Oak, Pin Cherry, Gray Birch, Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Beech, Yellow Birch, Sassafras, Persimmon and Black Oak.
Growing up we had very large, vase shaped American Elms in our neighborhood in NE Ohio but eventually they were killed by pests or disease or both. Like American Chestnut we offer this tree as a novelty item in that it was undoubtedly an important food source for some insect and perhaps by planting them we can help insect populations.
