Description
Cultural Information:
An adaptable species that grows well in moist, well drained soils but does reasonably well in dryer conditions.
Associated Species: [6]
Chestnut Oak, Beech, Sugar Maple, Bur Oak, White Oak, Northern Red Oak and Tuliptree.
Field Observations:
Black Oak is common in central Ohio and seems to do well in our heavy clay soils. It makes a reasonable street tree and some of our largest are along the avenue to the Delaware County fairgrounds. Acorns were collected from several large trees in a local cemetery. Black oak acorns are a favorite amongst squirrels.
