Cultural Information:

An adaptable species preferring rich moist soil; intolerant of drought. Can be found on calcareous soils and acidic soils alike. Can be found commonly along stream valleys and lower slopes within its natural range. Insect and disease problems are minimal. Up to 60’+ tall with an even wider spread.

Yellow Poplar, Hickories, Maples, Umbrella Magnolia, Cucumber-tree, Yellow Birch and Black Cherry.  Also Sassafras and Flowering Dogwood as understory species.

Field Observations:

A tree capable of being a real giant. Whitish-green flowers open after the danger of frost has passed and can put on a good show. A common inhabitant of the Appalachian forest; Ohio is in the northernmost part of its range.
