Field Observations:
This is one of the most attractive trees in North America. In early spring, right after the dogwoods are finished blooming, the deep purple, pea-like flowers begin to bloom from the trunk and limbs. In a fence row the purple begins with just a hint of color ultimately changing to a bright pink as the flowers mature. It is an unusual color to see against the dark trunks of adjacent trees and whole effect is beautiful. In a more shaded location the tree tends to grow smaller and stretch towards the light. Planted in full sun the tree stays shorter and bushier. Even in leaf the tree is beautiful with deep green, heart shaped leaves that turn yellow in the fall.
