A much more easily tranplanted species than White Oak (Q. alba). Within its native range it is naturally found in bottomland areas and areas prone to flooding. This species is not native to Ohio but has shown to tolerate our conditions quite well.
Associated Species:
Infrequently with Honeylocust, Sycamore and Eastern Cottonwood but it can be the dominant tree species in areas with Elm, Green Ash, Red Maple and Persimmon.
Dirr (1998) reports that Overcup is a relatively “obscure” species but one that is definitely worth considering. Along with transplant ease it is not expected to be a large oak (40′-60′) . A superior shade tree with a yellow-brown to brown fall display. A seemingly highly adaptable species to slopes and bottomland conditions.
