Description
Cultural Information:
Found naturally in woods that are periodically flooded. Prefers moist, rich, well drained and acidic soil. Chlorosis can be a problem in areas of higher pH. A very widely used tree for street plantings and forest reclamation. Plant in full sun.
Associated Species: [6]
Silver Maple, Sweetgum, Red Maple, Swamp White Oak, Sycamore, Blackgum and Bur Oak
Field Observations:
Pins are common in central Ohio with very few naturally occurring trees showing signs of chlorosis. However, a higher proportion of trees installed in local landscapes do not fare as well. It may be that these trees from perhaps non-local seed sources have a higher susceptibility to chlorosis than the locals do. Grows well along river banks and in wet fields.
