Sassafras can grow in a variety of conditions ranging from moist, loamy and acidic to dryer, rockier soils. Lateral growing roots can produce a dense thicket. Preferring full sun or light shade sassafras is a pioneer species that, in time, succumbs to the shade of larger trees. It’s an important food source for birds which distribute the seeds.
Associated Species:
Sweetgum, Flowering Dogwood, Beech, Hickories, Sugar Maple, Red Maple, Sourwood and Oaks.
Northeast Ohio has many backroads lined with tall multi-stemmed thickets of sassafras. The birds are relentless in their pursuit of the fruit. Trees tend to be a bit spindly if grown in shade. At our home we planted 6 sassafras on a sloping hill that receives full afternoon sun. They grew great this season and put on an additional 3′ in height. We did not water or fertilize them (we just never got around to it) but they probably could have done even better if we had.
