Description

Cultural Information:

A large tree commonly found in alluvial soils along river banks. It transplants well and grows quickly.  One drawback is that it tends to have shallow roots so do not plant it near sidewalks or driveways.  It is, however,  a good choice for growing in poor soil conditions.  Full sun.

Associated Species: [6]

Slippery Elm, Sweetgum, Pin Oak, Swamp White Oak, Sycamore, Blackgum, Sweet Birch, Gray Birch, Yellow Birch, Bur Oak and Swamp White Oak.

Field Observations:

Shallow roots make this tree a undesirable choice for home landscapes.  Also, as the tree grows older it begins to shed dead limbs especially with the winter winds.  Prodigious amounts of seeds are produced even from moderately sized trees.  One of the last trees to develop fall color; a strong, clear yellow.

Silver Maple is Native to the following States & Ohio counties
