Cultural Information:
Easily cultivated in almost any soil type in full or part sun. White fruit persists after leaf drop into the colder months providing winter interest. The plant spreads by underground runners generally creating an unruly thicket. Berries are important sources of food for birds and other animals. Fruit is toxic to people if ingested.
Associated Species:
Field Observations:
An attractive shrub with deep green foliage and brilliant white fruit. Often found in dry or moist open forests. An extensive native range in the US extending from Alaska south to California and east across the entire country.
Shipping Information:
In 2020 Riverside Native Perennials developed a shipping box that allowed us to reliably send our perennials through the mail. Since then, we’ve successfully mailed plants to thousands of customers. In 2024 Riverside Native Trees adapted that concept to accommodate our larger and heavier 1 gallon trees and shrubs.
Up to two (2) plants nearly 2′ tall can be sent in a single box. The pot is placed in a plastic bag with a precisely fitting cardboard “lid” holding the soil mass together. A specially designed inner box secures the pot and that box is placed into a heavy cardboard mailer. In effect, your plants are double boxed to keep them safe during transit.
Your plants are selected, packaged with care and shipped as soon as possible. We generally send the largest/tallest plants first, but we may send a tree or shrub with a more substantial stem that might be a little shorter. They may be staked if needed. Shipping generally takes a couple of days, but transit can sometimes take a week. Occasionally, USPS shipments can be delayed for a couple of days during busy times. This is no cause for alarm and your trees and shrubs can be planted normally upon arrival.
When planted in full or part sun after travelling in a dark box some plants may experience leaf scald. This presents as brown areas on the leaves and/or shriveled leaves which appear a few days after planting. In effect, the leaves are being sunburned. This is a “cosmetic” issue only and the plant will grow new leaves acclimated to the new, bright sun exposure in your landscape. Be sure to keep the soil around the plant moist (not wet) and apply a little bit of fertilizer (see below).
USPS charges accordingly for our relatively heavy and long boxes which makes mailing expensive. We do our best to keep shipping charges a low as possible but there’s not a lot of wiggle room for us. The boxes are automatically insured by USPS for $100 and of the thousands of parcels we’ve shipped on the perennial side of our business we’ve only ever had to make one insurance claim.
Riverside Native Trees can deliver large orders using our trucks and trailers. There is an extra charge for this so please call or email for more information.
