Cultural Information:
Grows best on moist, deep soils but is also found in dryer, more coarse soils. A common tree throughout its native range in the midwest, and when large, an important timber tree.

Field Observations:
A common inhabitant of fence rows and roadside berms where farming permits. Crushed leaves have a pungent odor. An important food source for the larval stages of several butterfly and moth species including Tiger Swallowtails, Red Spotted Purples and Promethea Moths.
