Description

Cultural Information:

This is an oak of more southern realms although many authors have seen it doing well in Ohio despite very low winter temperatures.  Some references indicate that the closest it comes to Ohio is the southern tip of Indiana and in northern Virginia although others have a single county, Clermont, in extreme SW Ohio as within its native range.  Willow Oak transplants more easily than other oaks because of the fibrous nature of it roots.  This is a beautiful oak that is well suited as street tree in neighborhoods or industrial area.  A highly adaptable species growing in rich moist soils as well as in dryer conditions.

Associated Species:

Persimmon, Red Maple, Honeylocust and Eastern Cottonwood.

Field Observations:

Dirr (1998) calls this species the “best oak for overall texture and form”

Willow Oak is Native to the following States & Ohio counties
