Cultural Information:
Grows quickly in moist deep soils along riverbanks but is also a pioneer species in areas that have been strip mined. In both situations soil moisture must be high to facilitate growth.

Field Observations:
Not often found far from water. Many of the parent trees that we utilize for seeds have their roots in the river and are completely submerged when the river is high. One of the few species that is found in every county in Ohio; indeed, it is found throughout the Midwest. It grows fast and produces a handsome young tree.
