A wetland species accustomed to light or heavy soils with a slightly acidic pH. Can be planted in full sun or partial shade although full sun promotes best fruit production.
No records located for associated species but seemingly would do well with other species adapted to wetter conditions like buttonbush, silky dogwoods, Sycamores, Red Maples, Swamp White Oaks, Shellbark Hickories, Pin Oaks and Sweetgum.
I have not seen this species very often but have seen several cultivars of it that are striking in late fall when in fruit. Where I have seen it growing is in moist to wet environments in full sun to part shade.
