Description
Cultural Information:
Easily transplanted shrub that can reach 15-25 feet tall and wide; though generally smaller. Can be planted in a variety of soil types but situate in full sun. Shade is not tolerated well. Would prefer a more moist situation and I have seen it grow well on the north side of wet woods until shaded out.

Field Observations:
I have not seen this shrub/small tree species in the wild in central Ohio. I have encountered it numerous times in northeast Ohio. It is a sure harbinger of Spring as the catkins start to swell just as winter breaks.
