Cultural Information:

This shrub prefers moist, well drained soils but do will well in dryer conditions.  Highly adaptable.  Transplants easily and can be grown in alkaline or acid soils.  Very few insect or pest issues.

Associated Species

Along the rivers in central Ohio we find Bladdernut with Basswood, Silver Maple, Eastern Cottonwood, Bur Oak, Chinkapin Oak, Swamp White Oak, Blue Beech, and Sycamore.  Shrub species would include Nannyberry and Eastern Wahoo.

Field Observations: 

An open shrub that gets to 15′ but I’ve never seen them more than 10′.  This plant will develop into a clump.  Seeds are difficult to germinate and are about the size of popcorn and just as hard.
