Description

Cultural Information:

A highly adaptable Rosa species.  Best growth occurs in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Full sun, however, promotes the best flowering.  Mulch in Summer to keep roots cool and conserve water and aids in winter protection of crown.   Prune in late winter to early spring.  Can grow to 15′ with support; up to 4′ without.

Associated Species: [6]

Other Rosa species, Silky Dogwood, Nannyberry

Field Observations:

An appropriate shrub for thickets, fencerows and clearings.  Flowers are 5-petaled and deep pink fading to white and have a very mild scent.  Can spread widely via canes.  Fall color is a rich combination of red, pink, yellow and orange.  Hips are red. Not generally recommended for small gardens due to spreading.  This plant is just starting to flower in mid to late July and the color on some is the richest shade of magenta imaginable.  The picture hardly does it justice.  Others are paler pink but I would hold out for the magenta ones every time.

Climbing Rose, Prairie Rose is Native to the following States & Ohio counties
