Cultural Information:
A highly adaptable tree that, by some, is not considered native to Ohio. Small trees transplant easily from containers and prefer a rich moist soil but do well in wet or dry, alkaline or acid soil. In bloom it can be lovely but is followed by seed bearing “cigars” which can be messy.

Field Observations:
During the first week of June in central OH the bloom can be lovely. Unfortunately, it is followed by the production of seed bearing “cigars” which are messy when they drop. The wood has a golden sheen to it which is beautiful for woodworking. The wood is naturally rot resistant and was brought to Ohio by farmers for fenceposts.
